A spectacular extra-time goal sends the Fennecs through to the last eight of AFCON 2024
Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations after a hard-fought but well-deserved 1–0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday night. In a tense and closely contested match, it was Adil Boulbina who sent Algerian fans into raptures with a stunning goal in the dying moments of extra time.
The match was marked by high intensity and solid defensive displays from both sides. Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, delivered a standout performance, making several key saves to keep his team in the game.
Just as penalties seemed inevitable, Boulbina made the decisive breakthrough. He beat Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right flank before unleashing a powerful, pinpoint strike that gave the Congolese keeper no chance. A true moment of brilliance that secured Algeria’s place in the last eight.
Still unbeaten in the tournament, the Fennecs will now face Nigeria in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash. For DR Congo, this defeat marks the end of their AFCON 2024 campaign, despite the optimism surrounding their World Cup qualifying hopes.
